This is why it is important to develop habits so that self-improvement becomes second nature to you. And when we are talking about habits, these are small changes we do but have a great impact on us.

Improving yourself is a very fulfilling journey but it can be challenging. This is why it is important to plan and prepare yourself. In planning, include habits you want to develop first and focus on these.

10 Habits to develop to improve yourself.

Developing good habits can be hard especially when these contradict our current habits, a.k.a. the bad ones. But it’s okay! This is why we are trying to improve ourselves, right?

It is good to realize that there are contradicting forces within you. This means that you can identify these habits and concentrate on changing these.

However, if you are like me who feels that everything just seems so wrong, it is hard to identify where to start. Should we start fixing our physical health? Mental health? Relationship with others? Yeah, I’m stressing you out.

So, let’s start with the basics.

How to Improve yourself

1. Fix your body clock.

Our body clock or our internal clock regulates our wakefulness and sleepiness. It may sound unimportant because it’s just our sleep, whatever right?

Wrong. Our body clock is very important to our health and productivity.

It is important to know that our bodily functions operate according to this 24-hour cycle. Aside from our sleep cycle, it also schedules our digestion, cell restoration, protein synthesis, etc

To improve ourselves, it is important that we manage our time, and what’s the best way to do this? By having a set of times when we can be super productive or sleep.

Start developing a solid morning routine so that you will feel energized when you start your day. And then, at night time, do your evening routine so that you can easily rest and fall asleep.

2. Drink plenty of water.

Do you know why there are plenty of mobile apps that the goal is to remind people to drink water? It is because many of us still don’t do this.

We aren’t made of 60% water for no reason. Drinking water helps maintain our health. It is good for our skin and hair. It helps in weight loss. It also helps us have a good mood. Water is good!

So, start staying away from soda or other drinks that are not water. And train your body to drink water even if you are not thirsty. Your body will thank you later.

3. Eat healthy.

We all know the benefits of eating healthy, right? Basically, it keeps you not sick and energized because you get the right nutrition you’re supposed to give to your body.

But, eating healthy can be a challenge to some especially those who grow up with McDonald’s and other fast foods. This was okay when we were younger because our bodies could keep up. And we did not have a choice because we were kids.

But now that we are older, we know better.

Make it a habit to prepare your meal or at least be more conscious of what you eat. And this starts with staying away from unhealthy foods. If you really crave for it, you can eat it on a cheat day!

4. Exercise regularly.

Exercising regularly has lots of benefits. It can boost your energy levels and mood. It releases endorphins that make you feel good.

It’s one of those habits that you can immediately feel good after doing it. It feels nice after a good workout but the challenge here is how to start to enjoy it.

If you are just starting, you may workout for a shorter time and the easiest workout you think you can do. It’s okay as long as you are moving. Then, you can challenge yourself.

Breaking that inertia is the hardest part. But once you found a good workout that works for you, exercising can be a leisure activity.

5. Meditate daily.

Meditation helps clear our minds for a while. It can also help reduce stress and anxiety.  In this noisy world, we need at least a minute of silence to calm ourselves.

There are many benefits of meditation such as reducing negative thoughts, focusing on the present, and managing stress. It can also help you know more about yourself. Meditation is also good when you just want some silence.

There are also different ways to practice meditation. It can be a guided one, mantra, or yoga. Personally, meditation is challenging because my mind is really noisy and I get distracted easily. This is why I like guided meditation so that I get reminded that I’m meditating (lol).

You can add meditation in your morning routine to help you prepare for the day, and also to your evening routine so you can relax.

6. Write journal entries.

It can be intimidating to write a journal because sometimes it is not easy to express yourself. Also, sometimes it is hard to reflect what is in your mind and put it in a journal entry.

Sometimes, it can be embarrassing when comparing our journal to others. Like, theirs are so creative.

Writing or drawing journal entries can help us manage what is on our mind and practice self-reflection. Which are really important when we are improving ourselves.

There is no pressure in doing a journal. It is yours and you can do whatever you want. You can put there your goals and aspirations. What happened during that day. What you are thankful for. Anything.

Just keep a journal notebook with you. So that when you think of something, you can easily write it in.

7. Practice self-care.

Sometimes, we are so busy that we forget to take care of ourselves. Or maybe sometimes we are too harsh to ourselves. Whatever the reason is, let’s allot time for ourselves.

Self-care practice can be anything as long as you want and enjoy it. You may be doing this subconsciously but make sure that it is good for you.

For example, eating our comfort food is self-care but binge eating is not. Watching a feel-good movie is self-care but watching Netflix all night is not.

Remember to take note of which ones are self-care and which ones are self-sabotage.

This habit should be the easiest, right? Just don’t overdo it. That’s the hardest part.

8. Read good books.

Feed your mind with good books. Our brain is our most powerful tool. And this is why we should empower it with things that are beneficial to it. If we don’t feed our brains well, then we are ruining its potential.

There are many benefits we can get from reading. By reading good books, we can enhance our cognitive skills, stimulate our brain, and build vocabulary.

Aside from learning, reading can be a temporary escape to this chaotic world. Reading decreases our stress, makes us fall asleep faster, and even increases our empathy, by getting a wider perspective.

9. Stop mindless scrolling in social media.

Social media, as great as it can be, can also have some serious bad effects. Some of the bad effects are addiction, depression and anxiety, and unhealthy sleeping patterns.

Do you sometimes find yourself scrolling through social media, and you do not know what you’re looking for anymore? That’s called mindless scrolling. And stop doing that.

When you start mindlessly scrolling, it can be hard to get out of there. Since you’re so engaged, you won’t notice your surroundings and the time. You started scrolling in the morning, and then when you stopped, it’s already afternoon. A whole day just passed by you.

Social media is important in this day and age, this is why it is not easy to stop it. But, use it responsibly and use it with purpose.

10. Keep your place neat.

Improving yourself also includes improving your surroundings. It is hard to better yourself when you’re surrounded by dirt and toxic. So, start with your place.

It is nice to go home after a hard day in a clean home. It does not just make you relax but it also does make you motivated to be better.

This habit may seem like a chore but it really is not that hard. Especially when you maintain the cleanliness. Cleaning is hard only when it’s been days or weeks since you wash your dishes. Or fold your clothes. Or organize your closet.

Develop these ten habits and you will feel better about yourself.

Self-improvement is not that easy. This is why it is important to do the basics first. Develop these habits first and you will be so much better than who you are before.

When developing good habits, it is important to note that this takes time. It is hard at first, but sooner or later, you will just notice doing them without you forcing yourself.

If it is easy, why aren’t all of us practicing good habits?

In addition to this, habits should not be forced because your body will just hate it. Instead, practice them gradually. Add them to your routine one by one until your body adapts to it.

Remember, growth is a journey, and enjoy the process!

Please share which habit do you think will be the hardest to do in the comment section. Share this with your friends also. Let’s all grow together!

Always rooting for you,
